Bible Tour Description
Ephesus is located in modern-day Selçuk, in the province of İzmir. It is approximately 20 km (12 miles) from Kuşadası and 5 km (3 miles) inland from the Aegean Sea. The site rests between two mountains. The Ionian Greek colony, Lydians and Persians took its control over the course of time and settled around the Temple of Artemis which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World when it was started to be rebuilt during the time of Alexander the Great. Later, Lysimachus, a general of Alexander the Great, needed to move the city to a new location for a new harbour.
Ephesus gained worldwide fame in antiquity for its Artemisium, mentioned in Acts 19:23-41. However, the city faced multiple devastations over time. In the 3rd century, it was attacked by the Goths, and an earthquake around 270 AD caused significant damage. Despite efforts to rebuild, the harbor eventually silted up, leading to the city’s decline. In 1304, Ephesus fell to the Turks, marking the end of its ancient prominence.
Today, most of the visible ruins date back to the Roman Imperial period. Visitors can explore landmarks such as the Great Theatre, which once hosted a big riot against Paul (Acts 19). The Temple of Artemis, though largely destroyed, remains an important historical site. During Byzantine times, Ephesus became a bishopric center after the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, which declared Mary as «Theotokos» (God-bearer). Many temples were converted into churches, reflecting the city’s transition from pagan worship of Artemis to Mary.
A Bible tour of Ephesus typically takes 3-5 hours slowly walking through the ancient city and includes key locations such as the Great Theatre, the ancient harbor, and other sites where Paul and the early Christians preached. The site of the Temple of Artemis can also be visited.
Ephesus is a remarkable place where history, archaeology, and biblical accounts come to life, offering visitors a profound connection to the past.
