Bible Tour Description
Thyatira was rebuilt in the early third century B.C.E. by Seleucus Nicator, a former general of Alexander the Great. Located about 60 kilometers (40 miles) inland from the Aegean Sea, it was situated along a tributary of the Gediz River (ancient Hermus) in western Asia Minor. Although it was not a significant political center or metropolis, Thyatira was a wealthy industrial hub, known for its numerous crafts, such as weaving, dyeing, brassworking, tanning, and pottery production. The city’s dye industry was especially notable, with dyemakers using madder root to produce a celebrated scarlet or purple color later referred to as Turkey red.
A notable historical figure linked to Thyatira is Lydia, who became a Christian during Paul’s first visit to Philippi in Macedonia. Lydia was described as a seller of purple from Thyatira, possibly serving as an overseas representative of local manufacturers. Her business success is evidenced by her ability to host Paul and his companions in her home while they stayed in Philippi.
The exact origins of Christianity in Thyatira are unclear. There is no direct evidence that Paul or other evangelists visited the city, nor that Lydia returned there. However, it is possible that the Christian message reached Thyatira during the time Paul was active in Ephesus, about 115 kilometers (70 miles) to the southwest, when many across the region of Asia were exposed to the teachings of Christianity.
By the late first century C.E., Thyatira was home to a vigorous Christian congregation. The congregation was praised for its love, faith, and endurance, as well as for its expanding ministry efforts. However, a serious issue arose within the community. A woman, symbolically referred to as «Jezebel,» was said to have misled members of the congregation into immoral practices and idolatry. Despite her influence, it appears that only a minority of the congregation supported her, as the message addressed «the rest» in Thyatira who had not embraced her teachings or been influenced by what were called “the deep things of Satan.”
The congregation’s ability to maintain commendable qualities despite internal challenges highlights its significance as part of the broader early Christian community.
